Please Donate Old Cell Phones for Soldiers

Chief Ed Nathanson of the Lady Lake Police Department has teamed up with the local Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart to collect used cell phones to benefit our military personnel serving overseas. In turn, Harbor Hills Country Club has agreed to join as a sponsor for this worthwhile cause called “Cell Phones for Soldiers.”

Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to turn old cell phones into more than 12 million minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas in 2008. To do so, Cell Phones for Soldiers expects to collect 50,000 cell phones each month through a network of more than 3,000 collection sites across the country. At Harbor Hills, we are proud to be one of the collection sites, with a donation box located just outside our Pro Shop.

The phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.

“Americans will replace an estimated 130 million cell phones this year,” says Mike Newman, vice president of ReCellular, “with the majority of phones either discarded or stuffed in a drawer. Most people don’t realize that the small sacrifice of donating their unwanted phones can have a tremendous benefit for a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers.”

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas. Some of the soldiers serving in Iraq have run up cell phone bills of more than $5,000 just in calls to home.

“Cell Phones for Soldiers started as a small way to show our family’s appreciation for the men and women who have sacrificed the day-to-day contact with their own families to serve in the U.S. armed forces,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “Over the past few years, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue to grow as more troops are sent overseas for longer assignments.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones with prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis. W

We invite all Harbor Hills Residents to drop their unused cell phones in the box outside the Pro Shop

The Troops Treat the Cookie Lady

The now famous Harbor Hills Cookie Lady Lillian "Lil" Riley was delighted to be greeted by one of her greatest and beloved customers. If you don't know by now, Lil, has been busy baking tens of thousands of cookies for her Treat the Troops program and sending them to our troops oversees. This small act of kindness and show of appreciation for our troops and country has garnered local and national media attention, however, her greatest reward for her hard work can be seen in the pictures below:

Lillian has baked about 35,000 cookies for our troops!

We netted $536. after expenses and trophies for Lillian Riley.

Harbor Hills Tennis Program

We had five teams out of Harbor Hills that were part of the USTA program. We had a men's 4.0 team to advance to go to sectionals in Daytona and some of our ladies to play on another team in our area that won the title and will be competing for the state in October in Las Vegas. We had a mixed team that lost by one game to go to Daytona. This is a national program and our club did great in this.

Central Florida Real Estate

March winds blew in more than hot air…it brought us some sales. According to the Orlando Business Journal, sales are up in Central Florida by more than 13%. This is great news and a sign that these baby steps might work up a little momentum for us in the Central Florida real estate industry.
Actually Harbor Hills did better than a 13 percent increase.

April numbers are not in yet but we do expect an increase in them which will be the third month in a row.

Harbor Hills Polo Party

This was a letter to Jerri and Geo Mayer re: Harbor Hills members going to Polo Match from Ted Drzewiecki.

What a super picnic and polo match.
Great weather and the super location and the unbelievable food...what did you do with all the leftover ribs?. It pays to have good contacts! We really love having organizers like you to organize our lives. We've never had so much social activity in our lives...and it appears to be so effortless! And the folks here are so great, Bob and Cathy seem like really good additions, and the regular crew as always friendly and interesting with something new everytime we chat.

Member Guest 2008

Congratulations to David Hoffman and Ron Steinert
Not only did David and Ron sweep their flight at this year's Harbor Hills Member-Guest Tournament, but they WON THE WHOLE ENCHILADA!!Surviving the three hole playoff for each of seven flight-winning teams, only two teams remained. In a total nailbiter (believe me), David's superior chip clinched the win! The chip was struck to thunderous applause, as the neighbors, in golf carts, celebrated the victory! More surprises were in store for the Dynamic Duo at the banquet that evening. The winners, David and Ron, received a standing ovation and accepted their trophies (which looked remarkably like the Heiseman!) Additional prizes included: golf bags by Cadillac, gold-engraved putters and the prized Harbor Hills jacket, suitable for wearing at next year's banquet. A fantastic time was had by all!

Dr. Claudia L. Thomas

It is great pleasure that we congratulate Harbor Hills's own Dr. Claudia L.Thomas on her recent Diversity award from the American Association Of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Those of us that live and work at Harbor Hills that have known her both as a resident of our community and that have seen her as a patient are very proud of her.

First black U.S. female orthopedist receives AAOS diversity award1st on the web (March 7, 2008)

March 2008
SAN FRANCISCO — From an orthopedic residency that began more than 30 years ago, Claudia L. Thomas, MD, has risen through the ranks of her profession to receive an honor bestowed on only a few individuals.
Claudia L. Thomas
She was presented with the 2008 Diversity Award here at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 75th Annual Meeting. Thomas was the first black female orthopedic surgeon in the country when she started practicing medicine in 1982.
Nominated more than once for the award, she told Orthopedics Today that her effort finally paid off. "It's wonderful and a very very positive thing," Thomas said.
Thomas admits she has surmounted many obstacles along the way and today helps men and women of all backgrounds seeking entrance not only into orthopedic residencies but into medical careers of all kinds, especially when their path is ridden with barriers. In an academy press release, she said, "I am still sought out by young people who are interested in pursuing orthopedics. This has given me the opportunity to mentor, encourage and 'prop up' those who may have felt discouraged along the way."
Her career and life have been varied. "My career has been all over the place, I guess you can say," she noted. Now in private practice in Florida, she has practiced at Johns Hopkins Medial Center in Baltimore and in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The field is more diverse than when she entered it, Thomas noted. "Those of us who were female and minority who came through the specialty made an effort to attract medical students who would diversify the field of orthopedic surgery," she told Orthopedics Today.
Statistics from the AAOS show the increase in female orthopedists now exceeds that of black surgeons
